Angel - On Earth As It Is In Heaven (1977) [FLAC] {Japan PSCW-1090}
(Number 3 out of 6 in this Japan 1st Press Series)

Includes 600 dpi HQ Scans

On Earth As It Is In Heaven is the third album by the rock band Angel. This marks the last album with Mickie Jones who was ANGEL's bass player since 1974. It was produced by Eddie Kramer (KISS/Jimi Hendrix) and recorded in an actual castle in the Hollywood Hills. This album marked the shift from progressive and symphonic hard rock to a more mainstream hard rock approach, with the exception of 'Cast the First Stone' and 'Just A Dream' which are very similar in sound to Angel and Helluva Band. In fact, 'Cast The First Stone' was written during the Helluva Band sessions. The band toured non-stop and it was during this time they would make their first and only tour of Japan. The Japanese fans reacted to Angel as if The Beatles had arrived. The album peaked at #77 on Billboard in the USA.

ALL MUSIC GUIDE Review by Mike DeGagne

By the time On Earth as It Is in Heaven was released, the Kiss comparisons were finally beginning to peter out, but so was Angel's career. It was the last for bass player Mickey Jones, who was replaced by Felix Robinson for the even weaker White Hot album, which came out a year later, but such a minor change was quite unnoticeable when paralleled with the band's declining record sales. Despite all of the bad press, On Earth still contains a couple of sufficient glam-meets-heavy metal tunes, found in the eye-rolling sexual pomposity of "Big Boy (Let's Do It Again)" and on predictable riff movers like "On the Rocks" and "Telephone Exchange." While the entire album may be a little much to sit through, a few of the tracks manage to sport a complaisant, all-in-good-fun hard rock feel, as do one or two of the tunes from each of Angel's first three releases. Still, a compilation or anthology of handpicked material is more convenient, especially for metal fans who want to check out Gregg Giuffria's early keyboard playing before his '80s hair band days in Giuffria.

MELODIC.NET REVIEW

This was the first (and only) Angel album to be produced by well-known producer Eddie Kramer, famous for his work with Kiss, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. For all the melodic rockers out there he might be more known for his work with bands like Icon, Air Raid, Fotomaker and many more. The album itself is of-course a real gem and an absolute landmark when it comes to pompous melodic rock and it bares all the ingredients that made Angel so unique and extraordinary. Amazing and strong vocals by Frank DiMino, absolute keyboard domination from Greg Giuffria, blistering and tasteful guitars from Punky Meadows and a steady and vibrant rhythm section in bass player Mickie Jones and drummer Barry Brandt.

If you call yourself a fan of AOR or are having any kind of interest in the melodic rock genre, then you can't call your record collection a collection unless you have this title in it. If you already have it, well then you just have to make an update to this fine edition from Casablanca Records.

{Japan PHCR-6008 1st Press Stay Gold Series}

Blackout is the eighth studio album by the German heavy metal band Scorpions, released in 1982.

Lead vocalist Klaus Meine had to undergo surgery on his vocal cords during the writing of the album and it was uncertain whether he would be able to record it. Demos of the material were recorded with Don Dokken as vocalist; however none of those recordings are featured on the album.

Rudolf Schenker could not choose between his guitar solos on "China White", so the US and European releases differed in this small detail.

A self-portrait of artist Gottfried Helnwein is featured on the cover of the album. Rudolf Schenker portrays this character in the "No One Like You" music video.

All Music Review by Barry Weber

Blackout was the Scorpions' first majorly successful album, due to its clever balance of pop/rock (the title track), power ballads ("When the Smoke Is Going Down"), and catchy heavy metal ("Dynamite," "No One Like You"). Vocalist Klaus Meine had a throat operation prior to the record's release, and surprisingly, his voice sounds more melodic and lively than ever. The rest of the band sounds great as well, and the album is highlighted by the fast-paced performances of guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs. Blackout has arguably been called the Scorpions' best record ever, and that statement is not unjust -- it has more energy than anything else they have ever released.

__________________________________________________________________________

German heavy metal marauders Scorpions recorded seven studio records before breaking in to the U.S. market in 1982 with Blackout. The album became the group's first platinum disc in the U.S., and the dynamic single "No One Like You" became a staple of album rock radio. While the Scorpions had created powerful anthems and epic rockers in the past, Blackout mixed the ingredients just right. The title track was an endorphin rush of fast-riffing guitars and electrified, high-pitched vocals that culminated with the sound of shattering glass. "Can't Live Without You" was a powerful melange of flash, firepower, and pure melody, and the slow, surging "China White" sounded like a psychedelic interpretation of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." After years of ignored visas, Scorpions had finally arrived in America. --Jon Wiederhorn

U.S. Charts #10, The RIAA certified Blackout as Gold on June 24, 1982 and Platinum on March 8, 1984.

AllMUSIC Review by Greg Prato

The Cars were responsible for some of rock's most recognizable radio hits by the mid-'80s, so when the band took an extended break after their successful tour for Heartbeat City, 1985's Greatest Hits was assembled. Mixed in with the familiar selections was a brand-new track, the playful "Tonight She Comes" (which became a Top Ten hit), as well as a remix of the overlooked "Shake It Up" ballad "I'm Not the One." And while most of the expected hits are represented ("Just What I Needed," "Let's Go," "Drive," "Shake It Up," etc.), some of the selections prove questionable -- why was the title track from Heartbeat City (an unsuccessful single) included instead of the 1984 Top 20 hit "Hello Again"? Other missing radio staples include "You're All I've Got Tonight," "It's All I Can Do," and the title track from Candy-O, which would have made the collection definitive (all are included on the more extensive Just What I Needed: The Cars Anthology from 1995). But for the casual fan, Greatest Hits will do the trick.

The Band

Ray Hinkley : Guitar Bar 7
Jeff Keith : Vocals Tesla
Tommy Skeoch : Guitar Tesla
Steve Smith : Bass Flame
Denis Bostok : Drums Flame

Additional personnel: Skip VanWinkle (keyboards); Stefan Neary (programming, loops).
Recorded at Undercity Recordings, North Hollywood, California in February & March 2000.

After awkwardly breaking up Tesla in 1996, lead vocalist Jeff Keith and guitarist Tommy Skeoch wanted to continue on with the blues-based hard rock sound of their prior band. Eventually recruiting Ray Hinkley (guitar), Denis Bostok (drums), and Steve Smith (bass) -- the latter of the two were formerly of Flame -- the Sacramento-based Bar7 resulted in 1998. The next two years would be spent on the road before Sindrome Records released Bar7's debut full-length The World Is a Freak in 2000.
~ Mike DaRonco, All Music Guide

History:
Bar 7 was formed from the ashes of Tesla and performed a similar brand of blue-collar, roots rock. However the band was short lived, and faded into obscurity with the reformation of Tesla in late 2000.
Formed by former Tesla members Jeff Keith (vocals) and Tommy Skeoch (guitar), they rounded out the band with Ray Hinkley (guitar) and former Flame members Steve Smith (bass) and Denis Bostok (drums). Originally named Sofa King, they played over 200 shows before deciding on changing the name to Bar 7 in 1999.
Another former Tesla member, Frank Hannon, replaced Skeoch briefly after the release of their only album to date. But after a couple months separation, the original members worked out their differences and reunited. A few Tesla reunion shows were scheduled in late 2000 and slowed down Bar 7's progress, and once the reunion went ahead full-steam Bar 7 became a faded memory.

Part "1" and last installment of a Japanese five-album TESLA SHM-CD Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) series featuring albums "Mechanical Resonance," "The Great Radio Controversy," "Five Man Acoustical Jam," "Psychotic Supper," and "Bust A Nut."

"Mechanical Resonance is the debut album by the American rock band Tesla. It was released in 1986."

I actually bought this when it first came out in 86', and in the same year, along with The B-52's "Bouncing Off The Satellites", Def Leppard's "Hysteria", Metallica's "Ride The Lightening" & "Master Of Puppets", Cinderella's "Night Songs", Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet", Alan Parsons Project "Guadi", Steve Winwood's "Back In The High Life" and Boston's "Third Stage", A really great year for Music but widely remembered due to a very trying time in my life at that time. Married only 2 1/2 yrs, I went through my first (and only) divorce, broken hearted, I found solace in burying my head into these albums. They got me through!

I've been a fan of Tesla ever since! ;)

Review by Eduardo Rivadavia AllMusic Guide

Sacramento's oddly named Tesla (a moniker inspired by renegade inventor and pioneering electrical engineer Nikola Tesla) took the side door to '80s hard rock success, sneaking up on the charts and into the bedrooms of none-the-wiser glam metal consumers with their rock-solid debut, Mechanical Resonance -- itself titled after one of Nikola's better-known experiments, and a fascinating case study in musical compromise if ever there were one. Essentially, the album was partitioned into two quite different halves, with side one predominantly tailored to seduce the aforementioned music fans via radio-friendly templates and therefore packed with mostly throwaway, cliché-ridden arena anthems like "EZ Come, EZ Go," "Cumin' Atcha Live," and the gloriously dumb "Rock Me to the Top," boasting few surprises but plenty of testosterone. Yes, a few hints of Tesla's substantial songwriting intelligence can be glimpsed within the gritty strut of "Gettin' Better" and the bluesy balladry of "We're No Good Together," but most of the band's more mature and accomplished songs are saved for Mechanical Resonance's revelatory side two. Here, lead guitarist Frank Hannon really takes charge and establishes himself as the band's de facto difference maker, beginning with an epic of Led Zeppelin-like class and complexity in "Modern Day Cowboy," which was built upon a lopsided riff so irresistible that not even its finger-twisting complexity could keep it from becoming one of their most popular standards. This was followed by another pair of eventual fan favorites doubling as good examples of Tesla's creative range, since the wintry drama of the piano-laced "Changes" stood in stark contrast to the upbeat summer vibe of "Little Suzi." And finally, as though the aforementioned detours didn't proffer enough food for thought, Tesla even flirted with art rock on the odd rhythms and clever economy of "Cover Queen," before concluding with the desolate sobriety of closer "Before My Eyes." Given all these qualities and contrasts, it's no wonder that Mechanical Resonance stood out as one of the 1980s' most eclectic hard rock albums, and provided a formidable introduction to one of the era's most underrated American bands.

{Japan Mini LP SHM-CD UICY-94114}

Part of five-album TESLA SHM-CD Cardboard sleeve (mini LP) reissue series featuring albums "Mechanical Resonance," "The Great Radio Controversy," "Five Man Acoustical Jam," "Psychotic Supper," and "Bast A Nut."

The Great Radio Controversy is the second album by American rock band Tesla, released in 1989. The songs combine 1980s metal with some blues-influenced elements, as well as the occasional love ballad. The record features many two-part counterpoints provided by guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch, on both electric and acoustic guitars.

The hit single "Love Song" received considerable MTV airplay and rocketed the band to stardom. Many tracks on this album later received acoustic versions on their follow-up album, Five Man Acoustical Jam, a precursor of the Unplugged trend.

The album is titled after the controversy about the identity of the inventor of radio. It is posed that Serbian engineer Nikola Tesla (whom the band is named after) is the true inventor of radio, while the Italian Guglielmo Marconi took the credit and is widely regarded as having the title. The album's inner sleeve recounts this story.

Review by Steve Huey AllMusic Guide

One of the band's best albums, The Great Radio Controversy retains the typical big-sounding production and anthemic hooks of '80s pop-metal, but Tesla adds a grittier, bluesier edge to their music than most of their peers. As on most of their records, Tesla's songwriting is consistently good but never quite great; however, "Love Song," "The Way It Is," and "Heaven's Trail (No Way Out)" are among their best, with melodies and riffs that aren't predictable, cookie-cutter product. The Great Radio Controversy broadens the sound of Mechanical Resonance somewhat with increased use of acoustic instruments, which provides more textural and dynamic contrasts, and the weaker moments are still enlivened by the twin-guitar attack of Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch. All in all, a fine effort.

Lita Ford was born to a British father and an Italian mother in London, England. She moved with her family to the United States at the age of 4 and began playing the guitar at the age of 11. Her vocal range is mezzo-soprano.
In 1975 at the age of 17 she joined the all-female rock band The Runaways, for whom she played lead guitar.

With Sharon Osbourne as her manager, and again produced by herself, the album featured four commercial hits, including "Kiss Me Deadly", "Back To The Cave", "Close My Eyes Forever", and "Falling In And Out Of Love" (co-written with Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe). The ballad "Close My Eyes Forever", a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, was her only Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hit, reaching #8.

“Producer Mike Chapman helped Lita Ford craft her true breakthrough album, Lita, loading it with big, slick arena rock/pop-metal hooks and making it her most consistent solo album. Ford scored big hits with "Kiss Me Deadly" and the ballad "Close My Eyes Forever," the latter a duet with Ozzy Osbourne and the first Top Ten single for either.

Five Man Acoustical Jam is a live album released in 1990 by the band Tesla, using acoustic guitars instead of electric guitars which hard rock/heavy metal bands such as Tesla were known for. The album is considered to have directly inspired MTV's Unplugged series from the early 90's. The biggest hit from the album was the song "Signs", a cover version originally from the band Five Man Electrical Band, who also had a hit with the song (Tesla's version included a few uses of "fuck" not in the original version). Other songs included "Love Song" (a hit from their previous album The Great Radio Controversy) and covers of The Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper", Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Lodi", and The Beatles' "We Can Work It Out". It was recorded live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the Trocadero Theatre.

Review by Steve Huey ALLMUSIC

Comparisons to MTV Unplugged tend to be thrown around in an attempt to promote any pre-Unplugged acoustic music by linking it with a successful, more contemporary phenomenon, but Tesla's Five Man Acoustical Jam was actually a legitimate predecessor of the trend -- it bears a strong resemblance to early Unplugged sessions in its informality and sense that the band is just having fun. Perhaps more importantly, the fact that a cover of the Five Man Electrical Band's "Signs" became a Top Ten hit demonstrated that acoustic rock & roll -- not just ballads like Guns N' Roses' "Patience" or Extreme's "More Than Words" -- could find acceptance and commercial viability with rock audiences. As for the musical results, Tesla's originals generally translate well to the acoustic format, though some of the jams tend to ramble and lose focus, a fact underscored by the tightly melodic covers of '60s classics like "Lodi" and "Mother's Little Helper." Still, this adds to the informal atmosphere, and the album is a nice change of pace from the rest of Tesla's catalog.

Tesla - Psychotic Supper (1991) [FLAC] {Japan UICY-94116}

Psychotic Supper is the third studio album from the rock band Tesla. The album was a tribute to the band's namesake Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-American inventor. The album was originally called "Man Out Of Time", but was later changed to "Psychotic Supper". The relevance of "Psychotic Supper" was a reference to Nikola's psychosis in later life, where he was obsessive about cleanliness and avoidance of food poisoning. The song "Edison's Medicine" is a documentary on the battle between Edison, who championed DC transmission and Tesla, who was in favor of AC power transmission. AC is by far the most popular today due to the ability to reduce I²R losses through voltage transformation. Nonetheless, Edison was convinced that DC was best.

A little too edgy to be considered pop metal, Tesla were probably the least pretentious band of the genre. On Psychotic Supper, they focus on understated, bluesy hard rock, with an occasional acoustic guitar thrown in for variety. The result is well worth a listen, and this album contains some of their best material, including the anthemic "Edison's Medicine" and the no-bull "Call It What You Want." "What You Give" is a lovely, tender alternative to the syrupy power ballads that so many hard rock bands indulged in during the late '80s and early '90s. "Song & Emotion," another slow song, is a tribute to the late Steve Clark of Def Leppard. Tesla's favorite themes are evident on songs like "Change in the Weather," "Don't De-Rock Me," and "Freedom Slaves," but "Toke About It" shows that they also retained their sense of humor. --Genevieve Williams

A Review I Pretty Much Agree With!

5 Mutha Fkn Stars! Stands The Test of Time, June 2, 2005
By susumu-5 (Japan)
Music world since the introduction of synth changed a lot and lots of great bands like BOSTON, JOURNEY, ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA and ASIA with bombastic dynamism in rock dominated the charts. By the late 80s keyboard-led music became necessity. Tesla came out of such era but stayed simple just as Led Zeppelin, Early Deep Purple, or Whitesnake. They recreated straight rock'n roll based on guitars and passionate vocals. Their style well honors Nikola Tesla, legendary inventor, where the band name came from.

Borrowing Nikola Tesla's 1943 invention, a machine cracking a nut, as the jacket image, the band fulfills the hard-rocking yet dynamic and acoustic rock to the edge.

The opening The Gate/Intro signifies their sound and SOLUTION rocks heavy competing well with Metallica's ENTER SANDMAN. SHINE AWAY, TRY SO HARD are my top favorites from this album and the reason I love this album. NEED YOUR LOVING is the beautiful Purplish acoustic masterpiece track. ACTION TALKS and CRY are well set heavy tracks.

Verdict: Rock'n roll masterpiece. Revitalizing guitar featured traditional hard rock.
Rating: 99 out of 100. Every track is the winner. Few albums can accomplish this.
Recommended for: Classic rock fans. Modern rock fans who love acoustic rock. Wide range of rock fans.
